New York Senate introduces digital advertising tax bill

New York state senator and deputy majority leader Michael Gianaris (Democrat) introduced New York S.8056, which imposes an annual gross income tax on a digital advertiser for digital advertising in the state. The proposed tax for digital advertising in New York is very similar to the tax proposed in Maryland. The main difference is that the Maryland tax applies to all digital ad services, but the New York tax is limited to targeted ads, which are ads that “use the personal information of the people to whom the ads are served”.
